A recent report on climate change suggests that Canadians need to brace for a future that could be 5 degrees Celsius warmer. The second edition of Canada’s Changing Climate Report highlights the significant impact of human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, on driving climate change. This report, released by the federal government, paints a concerning picture of Canada’s future based on different climate scenarios and the fulfillment of global climate commitments.

According to the report, if current climate policies are maintained globally, Canada could experience intensified warming, leading to a projected temperature increase of 5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, with some regions like Nunavut potentially seeing even higher temperature rises. Glaciers in western Canada are expected to lose over 75% of their ice, and there is a greater than 60% chance that the central Arctic Ocean will be ice-free in most Septembers.

The report also warns of significant challenges for southern Canada, where most of the population resides. Summers are projected to become hotter and drier, with more frequent and intense droughts, along with increased risks of flash flooding and atmospheric rivers. The length of the fire season is also expected to increase across Canada due to rising global temperatures.

While the report paints a grim outlook, there is still hope for mitigating the effects of climate change. The Canadian Climate Institute emphasizes that the projected 5-degree warming is not inevitable and calls for immediate action to reduce emissions. The institute stresses that cutting emissions globally can make a significant difference, potentially stabilizing Canada’s climate and limiting warming to 3.5 degrees Celsius.

In response to the report, a climate advocacy group has called for more substantial efforts to reduce emissions, linking recent severe weather events in Toronto to climate change. The Canadian government reaffirms its commitment to combating climate change, with plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The government aims to address climate challenges while ensuring energy security, industrial capacity, and strategic autonomy for Canada in the years to come.
