Ahead of the upcoming 2027 Juno Awards, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced significant changes to various categories and eligibility criteria. In a bid to align with industry standards, several modifications have been introduced.
One notable adjustment is that singles submitted for recording categories must now be standalone releases and cannot be featured singles from an album or EP. Moreover, categories such as rap, electronic/dance, reggae/dancehall, and contemporary Christian/gospel music will undergo updates to better reflect the evolving Canadian music landscape.
Specifically, the rap album/EP of the year and rap single of the year categories will be replaced by melodic rap recording of the year and rap recording of the year, respectively. Similarly, electronic/dance single of the year and electronic/dance album/EP of the year will replace electronic album of the year and dance recording of the year.
In the reggae category, reggae recording of the year will now be known as reggae/dancehall recording of the year. Additionally, contemporary Christian/gospel recording of the year will take precedence over contemporary Christian/gospel album of the year, making singles, EPs, and albums all eligible for submission.
Furthermore, updates to the classical and jazz categories’ eligibility criteria have been announced. The jazz categories will transition from an 80% threshold to a 51% requirement for vocal and instrumental performance in 2027. This change necessitates that vocal jazz albums contain a minimum of 51% vocal performance, while jazz (solo) and jazz (group) albums must consist of at least 51% instrumental content. Additionally, the featured vocalist for the vocal jazz album of the year must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
In the classical categories, the criteria for classical album of the year (small ensemble) and classical album of the year (large ensemble) have been adjusted to exempt them from the general restriction on compilation albums. Furthermore, the requirement that compositions be within the past 50 years has been replaced by the eligibility of original classical works by active Canadian composers.
