Canada’s men’s basketball team will be missing some key players in their upcoming push for 2027 FIFA World Cup qualification. The team is set to face Panama in Panama City and host Argentina in Quebec City. Toronto Raptors star RJ Barrett and Bennedict Mathurin from the Los Angeles Clippers will serve as team ambassadors but will not be playing in the qualifiers. Barrett explained that NBA players were not required to participate if they were not actively playing due to various reasons like injuries, fatigue, contract issues, or training camp commitments.
Shaedon Sharpe was initially planned to be part of the roster, but the Portland Trail Blazers guard suffered a meniscus tear and will be sidelined for six months. Star players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks will also be absent from the team. Barrett mentioned that managing player availability due to injuries and other factors is a common challenge, given the players’ evolving personal lives and commitments.
Canada currently holds the fifth spot in the world rankings and leads Group F with a perfect 6-0 record. The top three teams from each remaining group and the best fourth-placed team overall will secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup in Qatar. The team’s strategy for the qualifiers includes a mix of experienced FIBA players and a balance between inside and outside players for effective execution.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker, coming off a standout season, has been recognized as the NBA’s most improved player for his performance with the Atlanta Hawks.
