Police in Edmonton reported that two men were wounded during a disturbance at the Nanaksar Gurdwara temple. A 27-year-old suspect is in custody following a stabbing incident that occurred during morning prayers at the Sikh temple on the outskirts of the city. The altercation took place around 5 a.m. in the northeast part of Edmonton.
Authorities have not disclosed a potential motive for the stabbing. The EPS Hate Crimes unit is investigating the incident, as announced by Acting Inspector Eric Stewart of the Edmonton Police Service during a news briefing. Prior to the stabbing, police received a report of a man walking in traffic. The suspect, aged 27, entered the temple and tried to access the prayer room before assaulting two individuals.
According to Stewart, prompt intervention by witnesses led to the apprehension of the suspect before law enforcement arrived. The victims, aged 75 and 51, were transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, along with the suspect.
The suspect, known to the police with a history of violence, faces pending charges. He was recently released from a federal institution and had failed to report to his designated halfway house in Edmonton. The circumstances that led to the suspect’s presence at the temple instead of his assigned location will be part of the ongoing investigation.
Zora Grewal, vice president of the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple, revealed that the victims were a temple priest and a volunteer, contrary to initial reports labeling them as worshippers. While the suspect allegedly attacked the priest and volunteer with a screwdriver, temple officials clarified that no sacred texts were harmed.
Expressing shock over the suspect’s recent release from custody, Grewal emphasized the need for stricter measures concerning the release of potentially dangerous offenders. Both victims are expected to recover from their injuries, and security measures at the temple will be reviewed for additional safeguards.
The World Sikh Organization of Canada urged Sikh communities to enhance security protocols in response to the incident. The gurdwara, established nearly three decades ago, was temporarily closed for investigation. The stabbing occurred shortly after two Sikh temples in Alberta received threatening calls, prompting police cooperation with the affected communities.
Political figures, including Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the violence and emphasized the importance of safety in places of worship. Alberta’s official opposition leader, Naheed Nenshi, expressed concern over the incident and reassured support for the affected community.
