“Canada’s Marco Arop Places Fourth in Diamond League 800m”

Canada’s Marco Arop secured a fourth-place finish on Friday at the Diamond League track and field event held at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne, Switzerland. Arop set a quick pace and led the pack into the final lap but couldn’t sustain it, crossing the finish line in fourth position with a time of 1:43.18.

The race was won by Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi in a time of 1:42.19, with Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati in second place clocking a season-best time of 1:42.31. American Brandon Miller claimed the third spot with a time of 1:42.55. Last year, Arop and shot putter Sarah Mitton were the only Canadians to qualify for the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where they both finished third.

Heading into the Lausanne event, Arop was ranked second in the men’s 800m Diamond League standings behind Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi. Although Arop had not officially secured his place in the Final, his strong position in the standings made him a likely qualifier. The 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final is scheduled to take place on September 4–5 in Brussels, Belgium.

In the men’s 200m race, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, the reigning Olympic champion, clinched victory with a time of 19.87 seconds. South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile finished second in 19.98 seconds, while Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba secured the third position with a time of 20.14 seconds.

On the women’s side, American Kayla White emerged victorious in the 200m event, finishing in 22.18 seconds. Great Britain’s Amy Hunt narrowly edged out Nigeria’s Favour Ofili in a photo finish for the second and third places, both recording a time of 22.32 seconds. Unfortunately, two-time women’s world champion from Jamaica, Shericka Jackson, suffered an injury during the race and had to be taken off the track in a wheelchair.
