“Walter Cup Missing: PWHL Champions’ Trophy Vanishes”

The Professional Women’s Hockey League disclosed that the Walter Cup, belonging to the Montreal Victoire, current league champions, is reported missing. The league confirmed that the trophy did not reach its intended destination as scheduled and is currently coordinating with the shipping company to locate it.

The trophy was supposed to be delivered to Lethbridge, Alberta, for a planned day with Victoire forward Dara Greig. However, upon the container’s arrival, the Walter Cup was nowhere to be found, prompting Greig to postpone her scheduled events, including a public appearance at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.

There is uncertainty surrounding the last known whereabouts of the missing Walter Cup. Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, which has dedicated personnel traveling with it, the PWHL does not have such provisions for its trophy.

This specific Walter Cup version in question is distinct from the one awarded on the ice post-championship victory. The championship-winning teams receive this version to keep, while the official trophy remains permanently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Crafted from sterling silver by Tiffany & Co., the missing trophy weighs approximately 35 pounds and stands at 24 inches in height and 13 inches in width. Adorned with engraved W’s representing the league’s original franchises and a base showcasing past championship teams, the cup symbolizes the league’s rich history.

Montreal claimed the Walter Cup by triumphing over Ottawa in the fourth game of a best-of-five series in May, securing the title as the first Canadian team to do so in PWHL history. The cup is named in honor of league founder and primary funder, Mark Walter, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife, Kimbra.
