“Reviving Cultural Tradition: Family Dinners on the Beige Mat”

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories revolves around family dinners shared on a small beige mat. These gatherings were illuminated by the setting sun, creating a warm ambiance that enveloped us as we savored delicious Pakistani dishes. The star of the show was often a pot of aromatic biryani or creamy butter chicken with homemade naan. Seated in a circle, we passed plates, exchanged stories, and recounted the highlights of our day. This tradition, passed down by my father from his upbringing in Lahore, connected our past with the present in the quiet suburbs of North Delta.

As time marched on, the busyness of life crept in, and my siblings and I found ourselves drifting apart from these cherished family dinners. Over a decade had slipped by since we last sat together on that humble mat. It wasn’t until a Thanksgiving dinner at the age of 23 that the memory of those gatherings resurfaced. I invited my friends from diverse cultural backgrounds to partake in this tradition. Dusting off the worn-out beige mat from storage, we recreated the circle on the living room floor, placing our Thanksgiving feast before us.

The night unfolded into a beautiful moment as my father, seated at the dining table, joined us on the ground, sharing the significance of the tradition with my intrigued friends. This experience bridged the gap between my cultural heritage and Canadian customs, fostering a sense of togetherness and simplicity. Inspired by this revival, my father decided to bring back the tradition, leading to more shared meals and stories on the familiar mat.

As the sun sets, casting its warm glow through the curtains, we continue to gather on the beige mat, prioritizing family dinner time as a sacred ritual. Whether on the floor or around a formal dining table, the essence of togetherness remains constant, weaving the threads of our family tighter with each shared meal. Just as it did in my father’s childhood and as it will for generations to come, this tradition holds the power to unite us beyond the demands of our busy lives.
