Despite welcoming over 15 million tourists annually, Dubai enforces strict laws and customs that both visitors and residents must adhere to. One such regulation, highlighted by a British expat residing there, is a seemingly innocuous crime that could result in imprisonment.
Janelle Ciara, who relocated from the dreary UK to sunny Dubai, discovered this strict regulation. Initially planning a brief stay of one month, she found herself swiftly adapting to the luxurious city lifestyle, leading to an extension of her visit and pursuit of a visa.
In her exploration of Dubai’s customs, Janelle learned that uttering profanities or making offensive gestures, even on social media platforms, could result in severe consequences. In a TikTok video (@janelleciara1), she disclosed: “Individuals have faced fines for sharing disrespectful or vulgar messages on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and others.”
The Gov.uk website for the United Arab Emirates cautions: “The use of profanity and offensive gestures, including online platforms, is deemed indecent behavior. Violators may face imprisonment or deportation. Exercise caution when interacting with law enforcement and other authorities.”
Janelle’s video garnered 2.6 million views as she continued to enumerate a series of actions that “could shock a British individual.” Among them is the consumption of alcohol and public intoxication.
While consuming alcohol is no longer illegal in Dubai, and residents or tourists no longer require a license, public drinking is prohibited. Janelle clarified: “Consuming alcohol or being intoxicated in public spaces is forbidden. Alcohol consumption is only permitted in licensed venues such as bars, restaurants, and hotels. Violators may face fines or imprisonment if found drunk in public.”
