The United Kingdom is considering imposing sanctions on individuals involved in the violent civil conflict in Sudan, with Members of Parliament being briefed on the devastating aftermath visible even from space.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper revealed that satellite imagery depicts a grim scene of corpses piled up and bloodstained sand following the capture of el-Fasher in Sudan by armed paramilitary groups.
Over 30 million people urgently require life-saving assistance, and 12 million have been displaced due to the ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Characterizing it as the “most severe humanitarian crisis of the 21st Century,” the Foreign Secretary addressed lawmakers, highlighting the spread of famine, rampant cholera outbreaks, and preventable diseases. She described the disturbing events in el-Fasher, including mass executions, starvation, and the systematic use of rape as a tool of war.
Ms. Cooper emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the atrocities were so horrific that they could be observed from space. She stressed the urgent need for action to prevent further horrors from unfolding.
In response, Ms. Cooper instructed officials to expedite the formulation of potential sanctions targeting human rights violations and abuses in Sudan.
Earlier in April 2024, the Conservative Government in the UK imposed sanctions on businesses supporting the SAF or RSF and froze assets of entities linked to either faction. Efforts are underway to secure a three-month ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of critical aid to the conflict-ridden area.
Meanwhile, Ms. Cooper expressed dissatisfaction with Israeli efforts to address violence by settlers in the West Bank, deeming them inadequate. She underscored the importance of stability in the West Bank for sustainable peace, especially after the UN Security Council approved the establishment of a temporary international stabilisation force for Gaza.
Emphasizing the need for continued momentum, Ms. Cooper stressed the swift deployment of an international stabilisation force and trained Palestinian police to support the ceasefire. She called for the immediate formation of a Palestinian committee alongside the peace board to prevent any vacuum that could be exploited by Hamas.
