“NHS Enhances Support for Miners’ Respiratory Health”

Miners who have a higher risk of respiratory diseases will receive enhanced support from the NHS as part of England’s inaugural Men’s Health Strategy.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has committed to assisting men in former mining and industrial areas who have faced longstanding health disparities due to their past work conditions. This support aims to address the health challenges these men have encountered after years of working in hazardous environments.

Under the groundbreaking strategy set to be revealed on International Men’s Day, a £1 million allocation is designated for the respiratory pathways transformation fund to specifically aid miners. This funding will facilitate the identification of individuals requiring assistance, particularly those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Early identification and support for those at high risk of COPD will enable timely care provision to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations.

The allocated funds will be distributed to organizations nationwide with a historical connection to industrial backgrounds and visible health inequalities to ensure that communities with elevated rates of respiratory diseases receive support.

The Men’s Health Strategy aims to rectify disparities in men’s health by outlining measures to address critical health issues such as mental health, prostate and testicular cancer, and heart disease.

Streeting emphasized the long-standing neglect of men’s health, particularly in the mining sector, which has led to poor lung health among individuals from traditional mining communities. The upcoming strategy signifies a pivotal moment in identifying and supporting former miners at risk of or already suffering from respiratory diseases to provide them with improved care promptly.

General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, Chris Kitchen, expressed appreciation for the Men’s Health Strategy and the additional support pledged for mineworkers with respiratory conditions, a cause they have actively advocated for.

The Men’s Health Strategy is expected to announce an expansion of the Respiratory Pathways Transformation Fund initiative by investing an extra £1 million through the Oxfordshire Health Innovation Network to develop targeted case-finding initiatives in former coalfield regions, particularly for individuals with COPD. This initiative aims to identify those in need of support to access suitable local services and will be documented in the Men’s Health Strategy one-year progress report.
