Bella Culley, a pregnant British drug mule, has been freed from incarceration in Georgia. The 19-year-old, expecting to deliver in December, was anticipated to receive a jail sentence at a Tbilisi court hearing for drug smuggling. However, she was released upon prosecutors’ decision to modify a previous plea agreement that would have imposed a two-year imprisonment term.

Expressing gratitude to the court and tearfully embracing her mother, Bella described her release as a “huge surprise.” Walking out hand in hand with her mother, she emotionally spoke to her father over the phone exclaiming, “I’m not in jail anymore!” Her family, including her mother Lyanne Kennedy and father Niel Culley, had agreed to pay a fine as part of the plea deal.

Prosecutor Vakhtang Tsalugelashvili cited Bella’s age, condition, good behavior, and cooperation as factors influencing the decision to grant her release. Bella’s lawyer, Malkhaz Salakaia, highlighted that the move would enable her to become a mother under more stable conditions. The last-minute reprieve was granted just before the court hearing.

Bella, a student nurse from Billingham, Teesside, was found in possession of drugs upon her arrival in Georgia, resulting in her arrest. She claimed that she was coerced into trafficking the substances under threat and duress. Despite the challenges she faced, Bella’s release from jail has brought immense relief to her and her family.
