A father of four has been left paralyzed from the neck down after a tragic accident during the school drop-off. Mat Holten, 45, from Bodmin, was driving with his wife, Kristina Holten, after leaving their 12-year-old twins at Wadebridge school in Cornwall.

The incident occurred when Mat attempted to avoid a car that had pulled out onto the main road, causing a collision that led to his vehicle rolling over. Emergency services arrived at the scene to find Mat trapped in the car, while Kristina managed to escape. Mat was later diagnosed with a severe spinal injury, resulting in complete paralysis from the neck down.

Kristina recounted the harrowing experience, expressing disbelief at the sudden turn of events that left Mat in such a critical condition. She described the emotional toll of witnessing her husband’s injuries and the impact it has had on their family life.

Following a 14-hour surgery to address his neck injury, Mat has been transferred to Truro in Cornwall for further treatment. He will undergo intensive therapy and rehabilitation at the Salisbury Rehabilitation Centre for a minimum of six months.

Prior to the accident, Mat had aspirations of volunteering as an NHS driver. Now, with limited physical capabilities and ongoing medical challenges, he faces a difficult road to recovery. Family members noted the profound impact on Mat’s mental well-being and the financial strain of supporting his medical needs and travel expenses.
