“Whisky & Gin Makers Struggle: Calls for Duty Freeze”

Landlords in the spirits industry are raising concerns about the challenges faced by whisky and gin-makers, with a significant 38% of pub owners reporting that one of their suppliers has gone out of business in the past year. The latest survey conducted by Survation and the UK Spirits Alliance (UKSA), representing over 300 distillers and hospitality establishments, indicates a worsening situation compared to the previous year.

Distillers are emphasizing the critical condition of the spirits sector, describing it as “on its knees,” and are calling on the Chancellor to consider a freeze on excise duty in the upcoming Budget, following a 10.1% duty increase imposed by the Tories in 2023. Last year, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a further 3.65% rise in the Budget, adding to the financial burden on the industry.

Amidst the struggle faced by many British pubs due to escalating costs, the Mirror is leading a campaign to support these establishments. Jordan Morris, Co-founder of Abingdon Distillery in Oxford, stressed the urgent need for support, advocating for a freeze on duty to create a fairer and more sustainable system that recognizes the value distillers bring to the hospitality sector.

Natalie Hall, Director at York Gin, criticized the government for favoring beer and cider makers while increasing taxes on other products, which has negatively impacted pubs, bars, and consumers who enjoy spirits. She urged the Chancellor to reverse the damaging tax hikes and implement a complete freeze to benefit the industry’s growth and innovation.

Responding to the concerns, a Treasury spokesperson highlighted the importance of distilleries to the UK economy, mentioning measures to support their success, such as no export duty, lower licensing fees, reduced tariffs, and a cap on corporation tax. However, the spokesperson refrained from commenting on the upcoming Budget, scheduled to be presented by Ms. Reeves on November 26.
