WhatsApp is on the verge of addressing a significant challenge, prompting users to take action promptly to stay current. Currently, the primary method of communication on the platform involves sharing phone numbers, which is not always ideal.
After a prolonged wait, the app, owned by Meta, is finally addressing this issue by introducing unique usernames. With this upcoming feature, users will have the option to share their username instead of their phone number.
According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can feel like a significant step, especially when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event attendees, or members of group chats.
The new feature aims to enhance privacy in group conversations. For instance, individuals joining community or social group chats will now have the opportunity to participate without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to strangers.
Users are encouraged to reserve their preferred usernames in advance of the full rollout. Given the platform’s vast user base, popular usernames may be claimed quickly, making early reservations crucial for securing the desired name.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to:
Settings > Account > Username
The introduction of this feature will occur gradually in the following months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames are available in their respective regions.
