“IOC Stresses Fair Play Amid US VP Booing at Winter Olympics”

The IOC has responded to the booing of US vice-president JD Vance at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, emphasizing the importance of “fair play” and highlighting their positive relationship with the American administration.

Vance, leading the US delegation, faced boos from the crowd as the US team entered the San Siro stadium in Italy, turning cheers into an uncomfortable moment.

During a press conference, IOC spokesperson Mark Adams expressed satisfaction with the US administration’s engagement with the Games and the warm reception for the US team. He stressed the significance of fair play and a strong relationship with the administration for the Olympic movement.

Andrea Varnier, chief executive of Milano-Cortina 2026, avoided commenting on Italian perceptions of the US administration and instead focused on the enthusiastic cheering for the US team at the stadium.

The IOC urged all spectators to show respectful conduct, especially towards Israeli athletes, emphasizing the importance of supporting athletes regardless of their background or nationality.

Vance arrived in Milan before the Opening Ceremony, meeting American competitors and attending the US women’s ice hockey match against Czechia. He also had a successful meeting with IOC president Kirsty Coventry, as confirmed by Adams.

The Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina 2026 will run from February 6-22, offering over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video. Fans can access 24/7 Olympic coverage through the £3.99 discovery+ Entertainment subscription featuring TNT Sports 2.
