Richard Barry Randolph, aged 63, was executed via lethal injection on Thursday by the Florida Department of Corrections. Randolph had been convicted in 1989 for the murder and rape of Minnie Ruth McCollum, his former manager at a convenience store in Florida in 1988. The gruesome incident occurred when McCollum caught Randolph attempting to break into the store’s safe. He then proceeded to beat, strangle, stab, and assault McCollum before fleeing the scene with her car. Despite efforts to save her, McCollum succumbed to severe brain injuries six days later.
Following his arrest at a Jacksonville grocery store, Randolph confessed to the crime and led investigators to evidence he had discarded. Despite numerous appeals, including arguments about legal representation and access to public records, Randolph’s requests were denied by both the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. The execution took place without any reported complications, with Randolph choosing not to make a final statement before his death.
