Sky is set to introduce a new feature called Real Time, aimed at reducing streaming delays for millions of Sky users just in time for the upcoming World Cup. The new upgrade is designed to address the frustration sports fans often experience with streaming services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX, which can lag up to 40 seconds behind traditional broadcasts. With Real Time activated, Sky promises a more immediate viewing experience, minimizing delays that could lead to spoilers from neighbors.

Initially implemented for Premier League matches in 2024, Sky is now expanding the lower-latency streaming technology to include BBC and ITV coverage, ensuring a seamless experience for major events such as the World Cup. According to a statement from Sky, Real Time is powered by Sky OS and will bring live sports closer to viewers by reducing the latency between the live action and on-screen display.

To enable Real Time on Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices, viewers can opt-in during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the Real Time option on screen. The feature can be accessed through dedicated channels such as BBC One HD RT (EPG channels 926–944) and ITV1 HD RT (EPG channel 945). Sky’s transition towards internet-based services like Sky Glass and Sky Stream marks a pivotal update, offering benefits like simple self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+.

As Sky continues to focus on internet-delivered television and enhanced streaming experiences, Sky Glass and Sky Stream play a central role in the company’s evolving strategy.
