Jannik Sinner faced a sudden turn of events in his Australian Open match when his opponent, Hugo Gaston, unexpectedly retired and broke down in tears. Gaston, the French player ranked World No. 93, displayed a strong start by earning three break points in the first game against the World No. 2, but soon appeared to struggle physically.
During a break, Gaston was seen taking some tablets before returning to the court. Sinner decisively won the first set 6-2 and continued his dominance in the second set with a 6-1 victory, capitalizing on Gaston’s apparent fatigue.
After falling behind 2-0 in sets, Gaston made the difficult decision to withdraw from the match. Sinner, displaying sportsmanship, approached Gaston to offer support as he was visibly emotional.
Both players were disappointed with the match’s abrupt end. Sinner acknowledged Gaston’s physical struggles, stating that he noticed Gaston was not performing at his best.
Commentator Tim Henman mentioned that medical staff had attended to Gaston during the match, providing him with pills, which Gaston appeared to have taken. Henman speculated that Gaston may have been feeling unwell, similar to another player in a previous match.
Despite Gaston’s early promising moments, Sinner’s exceptional performance and strategic play ensured his victory. Sinner expressed gratitude for being back at the Australian Open, a tournament he holds dear.
