“Nursery Teacher’s Jealous Rage Leads to Child’s Tragic Death”

An atrocious incident unfolded when a wicked nursery school teacher raped and killed her boyfriend’s four-year-old daughter, culminating in a disturbing final act of drowning the child in a bathtub.

The teacher, identified as Amber Lee Hughes, confessed to the heinous crime against little Nada-Jane Chalita, triggered by her unfounded suspicions of her partner’s infidelity. Nada-Jane’s father, Elie, had entrusted Hughes with the child’s care while he attended a job interview in Johannesburg on January 23, 2023. Hughes, overcome by jealousy when Elie did not bid farewell to her, subjected the child to a fatal ordeal by submerging her in the bathtub and sitting on her until she perished.

Initially denying the charges of murder, Hughes eventually pleaded guilty during the trial, acknowledging that she left the lifeless body of the four-year-old in the tub with the water running. Testimony revealed disturbing messages sent by Hughes to Elie before the tragic event, containing threats of retribution and heartbreak.

At the trial, Hughes attributed her actions to a traumatic upbringing and mental health struggles, citing past experiences of bullying and suicidal attempts. Despite expressing remorse for her actions, the court deemed her actions as premeditated, with messages preceding the incident indicating her intent.

The court learned that Hughes had started a relationship with Elie in 2021, leading to her residing with him and Nada-Jane. The relationship was characterized by volatility, with Hughes making repeated threats against Nada-Jane’s well-being. In the legal proceedings, Hughes was found guilty of premeditated murder and vaginal rape, offenses carrying mandatory life sentences under South African law.

Elie, devastated by the loss of his daughter, expressed the inadequacy of any justice to compensate for the tragedy. The victim’s family faced further disappointment as the sentencing was postponed until February 16, 2026, adding to their anguish and frustration.
