A 14-year-old girl, Kylie Toberman, was tragically discovered deceased in a motorhome located behind her residence in Vandalia, Illinois, following an extensive eight-hour search. She was last seen around 9 pm on a Thursday and reported missing the next morning at 6:30 am, described as wearing a red sweatshirt and black leggings.
Kylie’s body was found at approximately 2:20 pm on the same day, and the cause of her death remains unknown. She resided with her adoptive mother, two sisters, and her step-uncle, Arnold B Rivera Jr, 43, who lived in the RV where her body was recovered, as stated by Kylie’s biological mother, Megan Zeller.
The Vandalia Police Department, in collaboration with the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency, initiated a search for Rivera Jr, who was eventually taken into custody. Rivera Jr was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated sexual assault, and concealing a homicide, based on jail records. Previous reports indicated his involvement in a 2000 case related to burglary and criminal sexual abuse. He had pleaded guilty to a separate charge to have both accusations dropped.
Megan Zeller, Kylie’s mother, made emotional pleas for help locating her daughter during the initial search, later confirming Kylie’s passing with a heartfelt online message. Zeller expressed determination to seek justice for her daughter and ensure the safety of her other children.
Kylie, a dedicated student and athlete, was highly involved in academics and sports activities. Rivera was arrested and booked into the county jail on Friday evening, awaiting upcoming court proceedings while the Illinois State Police continues their investigation.
The Vandal Wrestling Takedown Club, where Kylie was an active member, mourned her loss, acknowledging her as a bright and kind individual. Additionally, her high school extended condolences without explicitly naming her, acknowledging the devastating loss within their school community.
Amid the ongoing law enforcement investigation, the high school refrained from disclosing further details out of respect for the family and investigative process. Support services, including crisis response teams and counselors, will be available to assist students and staff during this difficult time.
The school community is urged to come together in support of the affected family and to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this tragic event.
