A recent report has shown that almost 66% of adults have experienced a worsening cost of living crisis in the last month. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), expenses related to energy and food continue to burden people’s finances significantly.
The study revealed that approximately 1 in 30 adults reported running out of food in the past two weeks due to affordability issues. This number increased to 8% among individuals living in England’s most deprived areas, as well as among renters and the disabled.
Moreover, nearly 60% of respondents mentioned reducing dining out as a way to cope with financial strains, underscoring the challenges faced by restaurants and pubs. This concerning trend coincides with Labour’s commitment to addressing the ongoing cost of living crisis as a top priority, recognizing its impact on voters, especially with upcoming local elections.
The ONS survey highlighted that the cost of living was the primary concern for 88% of respondents, surpassing other pressing issues such as the NHS, economy, immigration, crime, and housing. The report indicated that the significance of these concerns has remained consistent over the past year.
During the survey period spanning from the beginning to the end of December, a substantial majority of participants reported an increase in their cost of living compared to the previous month. The rising costs were primarily attributed to higher food prices, increased energy bills, and escalating fuel costs.
Furthermore, the study found that many individuals are adopting money-saving strategies like consuming cheaper food, seeking discounts, and limiting dining out. A significant portion of respondents expressed difficulties in affording energy bills, with some struggling to maintain adequate home heating.
Notably, the data showed variations in concerns based on gender and employment status, with women and certain demographic groups expressing higher levels of apprehension about the cost of living. These findings underscore the widespread impact of the escalating cost of living crisis across different segments of the population.
