“Brain Tumor Survivor Inspires Hope with Fundraising Walk”

A woman who thought her headaches and tiredness were due to menopause turned out to have a condition that left her deeply upset. Tracy Flynn, aged 51, initially dismissed her symptoms until an eye check-up in May 2024 revealed a significant tumor.

After undergoing various tests, including CT and MRI scans at Southampton General Hospital, doctors confirmed the presence of a brain tumor – specifically an acoustic neuroma – located behind her right ear. Although the tumor was successfully removed, Tracy now faces ongoing mobility issues.

The mother of three, residing in Eastleigh, Hampshire, recounted, “Ten days passed without any updates from the hospital, so I assumed no news was positive. I was mistaken.”

“When the neurologist informed me about the brain tumor over the phone, I was shocked. I returned home and wept. I was certain I wouldn’t survive.”

An acoustic neuroma is a growth positioned on the vestibular nerve, connecting the inner ear to the brain. Tracy underwent a major operation conducted by three surgeons at Southampton General Hospital on October 1, 2024, to eliminate the tumor.

Despite the successful removal of the tumor and her balance nerve, the 10-hour surgery has resulted in enduring complications for Tracy. She now copes with permanent mobility challenges, hearing loss in her right ear, facial paralysis, and balance difficulties.

“There was a period when I couldn’t walk at all. I relied on a wheelchair and had to relearn walking step by step,” Tracy shared.

The surgeons were relieved to detect the tumor before it progressed further, potentially leading to more severe issues and even fatal consequences.

Reflecting on her experience, Tracy said, “In hindsight, all the signs were there, but I failed to connect them. Without visiting the optician, I might not be here today.”

“My optometrist managed to observe the back of my eye, where the tumor was discovered. Symptoms can mimic common ailments, so never overlook them and always seek answers,” she emphasized.

Upon her recuperation, Tracy is embarking on the ’99 Miles in November’ challenge, walking alongside her 17-month-old grandson Marley to raise awareness and funds for individuals affected by similar conditions. The event, organized by Brain Tumour Research, aims to utilize the proceeds to advance research and enhance outcomes for patients like Tracy.

Participants are encouraged to complete 99 miles through various activities like walking, running, cycling, swimming, or gym workouts, at their own pace and style.

“Participating in 99 Miles in November holds great significance for me because now I can walk, and I’m doing it for those who cannot,” expressed Tracy. “It’s my way of giving back, spreading awareness, and demonstrating that there is life and hope beyond a brain tumor.”

Individuals interested in joining the challenge this month or contributing can do so through the website. Letty Greenfield, the community development manager at Brain Tumour Research, commended Tracy’s courage in sharing her journey to assist others and raise crucial funds for research. Enroll for the 99 Miles in November challenge to unite with Tracy and others in the quest for a cure for brain cancer.
