BBC TV Licence Fee to Increase to £180 from April 1

The BBC licence fee is scheduled to increase shortly, as confirmed by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport. Starting April 1, the annual cost of the TV licence will be £180, up from the current £174.50 per year.

A TV licence is necessary to watch or record live TV programs on any device, whether it’s a television, computer, tablet, or phone. This requirement also applies to viewing any content on BBC iPlayer. However, if you only watch catch-up content on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, a TV licence is not mandatory.

Failure to have a TV licence while watching live TV can result in a potential fine of up to £1,000. In the 2023/24 fiscal year, the licence fee contributed to 68% of BBC funding, with the total BBC income amounting to £5.39 billion.

Certain individuals are eligible for exemptions or discounts. For instance, those claiming Pension Credit and aged 75 and above can receive a free TV licence. Students living away from home may be covered if their parents hold a TV licence, provided they are watching on select devices.

Special discounts apply to households with blind or severely sight-impaired individuals, as well as those in residential care or sheltered accommodation. The cost of a TV licence typically increases annually in April based on the previous September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate.

Following the confirmed 3.8% inflation rate for September, the TV licence fee will rise to £180 on April 1, with the annual cost of a color TV licence increasing by £5.50. This adjustment amounts to an additional 46p per month.
