“British Nuclear Test Veterans to Finally Receive Medal of Honor”

British veterans who participated in dangerous missions amidst nuclear fallout in the Pacific are set to receive a medal in recognition of their bravery. These veterans, numbering in the hundreds, were instrumental in tracking and documenting significant nuclear explosions conducted by France and China in the Pacific region while serving in the Royal Air Force and Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Initially excluded from receiving the nuclear test medal due to stricter eligibility criteria imposed by the previous Conservative government, these courageous individuals will now be honored for their contributions. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the vital role played by these nuclear test veterans in safeguarding the security and freedoms of the UK, expressing the nation’s long-overdue gratitude towards them.

The establishment of the nuclear test medal in 2023, following a successful campaign by the Mirror, has already benefited nearly 6,000 British veterans who participated in bomb tests in Australia and Christmas Island between 1952 and 1967. The scope of recognition has now been extended to include civilian crews from the Royal Fleet Auxiliary who monitored explosions at sea, as well as RAF crews engaged in intelligence-gathering activities during French tests until 1974 and Chinese tests until 1980.

Many of these veterans have reported health issues, including cancer, which they attribute to radiation exposure during their service. John Cammish, a ground crew chief in the RAF, passed away in 2020 after battling cancer linked to radiation exposure. His widow, Lucy, expressed her happiness at the belated acknowledgment of their sacrifices.

While the Medal for Heroes is a significant step towards honoring these veterans, some individuals have chosen not to accept the medal, citing concerns about the exclusion of certain comrades who were exposed to radiation while maintaining contaminated aircraft post-mission. Campaigners and the Mirror continue to advocate for justice for the victims of the Nuked Blood Scandal, urging for comprehensive research and recognition of all affected individuals.

The Mirror remains committed to supporting these veterans and their families, pushing for transparency and justice in the aftermath of the nuclear tests. The tireless efforts of advocacy groups like LABRATS and the Mirror have been instrumental in securing overdue recognition for these deserving individuals.
