“Tragic Death: Grizzly Bear Kills Experienced Animal Trainer”

An experienced animal trainer tragically lost his life after being fatally attacked by a grizzly bear he had raised from a cub in a failed stunt.

Stephan Miller, aged 39, was assisting at his relative’s animal training facility, Randy Miller’s Predators in Action, located in the San Bernardino mountains close to Los Angeles, USA, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The trainer was collaborating with his cousin on a promotional video featuring Rocky, a massive 7.5ft tall grizzly weighing approximately 50 stone, due to his expertise in handling bears and involvement in the entertainment industry.

Rocky, a five-year-old grizzly accustomed to human interaction, had previously appeared in the 2008 film Semi-Pro, where Stephan served as a body double for actor Will Ferrell during a wrestling scene.

During the filming session on the day of the attack, the bear unexpectedly attacked Stephan by lunging at his neck, catching him off guard and inflicting a severe bite in a vulnerable area.

Prompt action by handlers using pepper spray managed to subdue the bear swiftly, allowing emergency medical services to arrive on scene. Sadly, despite efforts to save him, Stephan succumbed to his injuries within minutes of the attack, leaving behind a wife and two children.

Randy recounted the swift and tragic events to the Associated Press, highlighting the urgency of the situation and the futile attempts to rescue Stephan from the bear’s grasp.

With over 25 years of experience in working with exotic animals, Randy had established his business specializing in staged animal performances and encounters.

Recounting the events leading up to the attack, Randy shared that Stephan had been engaging with the bear throughout the day, reconnecting with the creature before the scheduled wrestling sequence. Despite meticulous planning and safety precautions, the bear unexpectedly turned aggressive, leading to the tragic outcome.

Following the incident, authorities from the Department of Fish and Game and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the bear’s future.

After advocacy from animal welfare groups, Rocky was spared from euthanasia and relocated to an animal sanctuary in California. Officials confirmed that the training facility possessed all necessary permits for filming and handling wild animals.

Apart from Rocky, the training center housed various other exotic animals, including brown bears, a black bear, snakes, reptiles, an alligator, crocodile, leopard, mountain lion, African lions, and tigers.

Hollywood filmmaker Nick Palumbo, a friend of Stephan and Randy, expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic loss. He emphasized that Stephan had a strong bond with the bear and defended the animal’s intentions, stating that it was not deliberate harm but a tragic accident in their shared history of raising the bear together.
