A horse named Blowers made history in British racing by winning at the longest odds ever recorded. Trained by former Grand National-winning jockey Nigel Hawke, this five-year-old gelding had a poor track record with no prior wins.
Despite previous disappointing performances, including a significant loss in a point-to-point Flat race and being pulled up in a hurdles debut, Blowers defied expectations at Exeter. With jockey James Best leading the way, Blowers held off the favorite, On The Bayou, to secure a surprising victory at massive odds.
This remarkable win by Blowers broke a 35-year record in British racing, surpassing the previous longest-priced winner in 1990. Bookmaker Coral received 82 bets on Blowers, with the largest being a £2 each-way single bet.
Nigel Hawke expressed his satisfaction with Blowers’ performance, highlighting the horse’s potential and the challenge of managing his energy during races. The stewards investigated the sudden improvement in Blowers’ form, accepting Hawke’s explanation that better settling and a change in riding tactics contributed to the unexpected victory.
