A man from the UK is currently missing following the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy who encountered difficulties while swimming in Malta.
Emergency responders, along with the police and the Civil Protection Department, initiated an extensive search operation using dinghies and helicopters at Ramla Bay after the incident occurred around 1pm on Monday. Despite being swiftly rescued from the water, the boy could not be saved and passed away upon arrival at the hospital.
Details regarding whether the man and the boy were swimming together when the incident happened remain unclear. The local Meteorological Office had issued warnings about strong winds affecting Malta at the beginning of the week. So far in 2025, 16 individuals have unfortunately drowned in the region.
The search for the unidentified man has resumed today. Magistrate Brigitte Sultana is overseeing an inquiry into the recent events as reported by local sources.

The individual, aged 43, entered the waters at the Blue Lagoon in Comino. Bystanders noticed him submerged and performed CPR upon bringing him to the surface, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to a police spokesperson, Magistrate Brigitte Sultana has launched an investigation into the tragic incident. Volunteer first-aiders from Malta’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps promptly responded, transporting him to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo.
Regrettably, drowning incidents in Malta are on the rise. An Italian man, aged 35, lost his life in August after facing difficulties at the Blue Lagoon. Additionally, the body of a missing 71-year-old fisherman was discovered off the coast of Comino in April.
Another tragic incident involved a Spanish tourist who was struck by a boat propeller while boarding a vessel in Comino, leading to severe injuries and her subsequent passing in July.
Despite being a popular tourist destination, the Blue Lagoon has raised safety concerns, including those related to its natural environment. The website emphasizes safety measures in place, including lifeguards and designated swimming areas for visitor safety from May to October.
