“Google & Back Market Introduce ChromeOS Flex USB Kit”

Nearly six months have passed since Windows 10 stopped receiving official support from Microsoft. Consequently, a significant number of laptops are now vulnerable to potential cyber threats and malware attacks due to the lack of essential security updates. While some newer devices can be smoothly upgraded to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs often do not meet the necessary system requirements, forcing users to make challenging choices.

Users facing this dilemma can opt to continue using their unsupported laptops, purchase extended updates (ESUs) for a fee, or invest in new devices that come with Windows 11 pre-installed.

For those unenthusiastic about these options, there is now an additional solution available to prolong the lifespan of aging PCs and prevent them from being discarded. Google has recently partnered with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes old laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex serves as a lightweight operating system suitable for many older computers, essentially transforming them into devices resembling Chromebooks. Once installed, users can access various services such as Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to invest in a new laptop.

While ChromeOS Flex has always been downloadable for free from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before committing to a complete installation. These kits have gained significant popularity, with high demand leading to them currently being out of stock.

In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, putting those computers at risk of obsolescence. This left many people with a difficult decision: spend hundreds on a new device, or continue using an insecure, outdated one.”

Google further explained, “To provide an alternative solution, Google is collaborating with Back Market, a prominent refurbished electronics provider. Starting today, a new ChromeOS Flex USB Kit is available on their platform to assist users in installing our fast, secure, and free operating system to modernize their existing PCs or Macs.”

Priced at approximately £3, the kit offers a reusable USB stick, contributing to the reduction of electronic waste. However, due to high demand, the item is currently listed as out of stock on Back Market.

Beyond the revitalization of older laptops, Google highlights the potential environmental benefits of ChromeOS Flex. “The manufacturing process of a new laptop significantly impacts its carbon footprint,” Google emphasized.

“ChromeOS Flex allows already-manufactured devices to be utilized for longer durations, preventing hardware from ending up in landfills and reducing emissions associated with creating new devices. Moreover, ChromeOS consumes 19% less energy on average compared to other similar systems.”
