A newly developed Russian nuclear weapon, known as the “flying Chernobyl,” has raised concerns as President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Putin has described the missile, named the 9M730 Burevestnik, as invincible and highlighted its effectively unlimited range due to its nuclear-powered propulsion. The missile, also referred to as SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO, was recently tested by Russia.
During a speech at a military command post, Putin proudly announced the successful test flight of the Burevestnik missile, emphasizing its nuclear-powered capabilities and extended range. The missile reportedly traveled 8,700 miles and remained airborne for approximately 15 hours. Putin declared that Russia now possesses the most advanced nuclear forces globally, showcasing the weapon’s superiority.
In response, President Trump criticized Putin for prioritizing missile testing over resolving conflicts like the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump hinted at imposing further sanctions on Russia, indicating potential future actions. The missile, nicknamed “Skyfall” by NATO, has faced criticism for emitting radioactive exhaust, posing risks even to Russia itself, according to State Department official Thomas Countryman.
Despite initial setbacks in testing, Putin stated that the Burevestnik missile has overcome challenges and is nearing deployment. The escalating tensions come as the conflict in Ukraine persists, with recent casualties reported. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed concerns about the potential risks posed to the UK if Russia were to attack a NATO member, urging vigilance and preparedness.
Tusk also highlighted the need for increased awareness and response to security threats, citing recent incidents linked to Russian intelligence operations. The possibility of deploying hypersonic ballistic missiles in neighboring regions further amplifies security concerns across Europe. Amidst the rising tensions, Ukraine remains steadfast in its determination to defend its sovereignty, with ongoing support from international allies.
