Virgin Media is set to upgrade the routers of some broadband customers to enhance their internet speed. The company announced that users with older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices will soon be able to switch to the more advanced Hub 5 technology at no additional cost.

The Hub 5 features upgraded Wi-Fi 6 technology, providing faster and more reliable connections compared to the older routers. Virgin Media plans to gradually roll out these upgrades throughout 2026, with eligible customers being notified via email in the coming weeks and months.

The new router is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas to ensure stronger and more consistent coverage within homes. Virgin Media aims to benefit thousands of customers by upgrading them to the Hub 5 during the year.

Customers who qualify for the upgrade will receive direct communication from Virgin Media, eliminating the need for them to take any immediate action. They can also verify their eligibility by accessing their My Virgin Media account online.

To determine which router they currently have, users can check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device or log in to the Virgin Media Connect app for confirmation.

Upgrading to the Hub 5 router can enhance the broadband experience by offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. The new router is optimized for faster Gig1 speeds, leading to quicker downloads and streaming. Gig1 speeds enable users to download a full HD movie in less than 40 seconds, significantly faster than the UK average.

Wi-Fi 6 is the latest wireless networking technology, delivering faster speeds, enhanced efficiency, and improved performance in busy environments. It can accommodate more connected devices simultaneously, provide better performance across different frequency bands, and is energy-efficient, making it ideal for modern smart homes with high data demands. Although Wi-Fi 7 is available, Wi-Fi 6 remains optimal for the average user.
