“Victims Unite Against UK Exit from Human Rights Convention”

Victims of some of the most severe institutional injustices in Britain have come together to urge government officials against dismantling crucial human rights safeguards.

Families impacted by the Grenfell, Hillsborough, contaminated blood, and Windrush scandals, along with advocates for Covid-19 bereaved individuals, have penned a compelling letter emphasizing the significance of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in current times. Recently, Nigel Farage, the head of Reform, proposed a Bill advocating for the UK’s exit from the ECHR, a move that activists warn would have catastrophic consequences.

In their joint statement, the groups underscored the essential role the convention plays in their fight against state cover-ups and failures. They expressed, “We speak as organizations who have experienced the repercussions of institutional failures and the denial of truth, accountability, and justice.”

The letter further highlighted that without the protections offered by the ECHR, their battles would have been more arduous, isolated, and seemingly hopeless. The Convention did not guarantee justice but provided the opportunity to pursue it: a chance to demand explanations, push for accountability, and challenge authority when it shied away. It served as a defense against silence.

The signatories cautioned that withdrawing from the ECHR, established in 1950 and championed by Winston Churchill, would be a betrayal. They stressed that in the current climate of uncertainty, division, conflict, and rising authoritarianism, the values enshrined in the ECHR are more crucial than ever.

Notable organizations and figures supporting the letter include Grenfell United, Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, the Tainted Blood Campaign, Justice4Windrush, attorney Elkan Abrahamson representing Hillsborough justice, and Imran Khan KC, legal counsel for Stephen Lawrence’s family. Additional endorsements came from INQUEST, Reclaim These Streets, Police Spies out of Lives, and the Centre for Military Justice.

Tom Morrison, Amnesty UK’s Legal Protection for Human Rights Campaign Manager, stated, “When advocates for major justice causes such as Grenfell, Hillsborough, contaminated blood, and Covid-bereaved families unite, political leaders must pay attention.” He emphasized the critical role the ECHR plays in ensuring justice when governmental institutions fail individuals.

Both Reform UK and the Conservative Party have pledged to withdraw Britain from the ECHR, arguing that it hampers efforts to safeguard the UK’s borders. Keir Starmer has called for a reassessment of how UK courts interpret the ECHR and other international treaties, affirming that the Labour Party will not support withdrawal.

Recently, Nigel Farage’s proposal to exit the ECHR was rejected by a majority vote. In a scathing critique by Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, Farage was accused of advancing his career by harming the country and aligning with Donald Trump.

Sir Ed emphasized the importance of laws that empower individuals to hold the powerful accountable and ensure justice prevails in cases of elite cover-ups and abuse of power. He cautioned against complying with Reform’s agenda, asserting that such actions would please authoritarian regimes worldwide.

Presenting his argument, Farage contended that public discontent was mounting, asserting that judicial decisions on immigration matters should not be subject to the ECHR jurisdiction. He criticized the influence of judges in Strasbourg and within the UK, questioning their qualifications and their diverging interpretations of British common law principles.
