“US Nuclear Weapons at RAF Lakenheath Raise UK Target Worries”

Britain is facing increasing worries about the possibility of a nuclear attack as global tensions rise. RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, under US operation, is anticipated to store US/NATO nuclear weapons soon, putting the UK at the forefront of potential conflicts between the US and Russia.

The presence of American nuclear weapons on British territory significantly heightens the nation’s risk of being targeted. Military experts indicate that in a wartime scenario, Lakenheath is likely to be hit first before other areas in the country.

While analysts recognize that a nuclear conflict involving the US, NATO, and Russia would have devastating global repercussions, it is essential to understand the direct impact on British towns and cities. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament warns that a single nuclear strike on any urban area would be catastrophic for the local population and environment, with far-reaching radioactive consequences.

If a Russian warhead, such as an SS-25 or SS-27, were to strike London, nearly a million people could perish. Similarly, an attack on Glasgow might result in 326,000 casualties, and in Cardiff, 196,000 lives could be lost.

The core of a nuclear blast is expected to reach temperatures in the millions of degrees centigrade, causing a heat flash that would destroy all human tissue within a 1.5 square mile radius.

Looking back to 1945 when the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima, leaving only shadows seared into stone within a half-mile radius, the bombings claimed up to 200,000 lives, predominantly civilians.

In the event of a nuclear explosion, individuals up to four miles from the blast site would likely perish due to the explosion and ensuing firestorm, as the intense heat would ignite structures, leading to a firestorm fueled by oxygen depletion.

The report indicates that the immediate fatality rate in the blast zone would surpass 90%. Beyond the immediate impact zone, fatalities would gradually increase among survivors of the initial explosion, with individuals experiencing severe burns, amputations, blindness, and internal injuries up to seven miles from the blast site.

Unlike conventional disasters, the high mortality rate in a nuclear scenario would overwhelm emergency services, resulting in limited responses and strained medical resources across the UK, potentially affecting individuals up to 11 miles away.

Survivors of the initial blast would face the aftermath of radioactive fallout, leading to various health issues ranging from hair loss to internal bleeding, with long-term effects including radiation-induced cancers that could surface years later.

Furthermore, children born to individuals exposed to radiation are at higher risk of abnormalities and leukemia, while the environmental and climatic consequences of nuclear weapons could lead to widespread starvation affecting billions of people globally.
