“URGENT: Recall Issued for Botulism Risk in Tomato Sauces”

Consumers are being warned about a potentially life-threatening risk associated with specific jars of tomato sauce. First and Last Bakery, LLC, has issued an urgent recall for three popular tomato-based pasta sauces due to the possible presence of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause severe food poisoning. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that these products were manufactured without an approved process, allowing the dangerous bacterium to develop. The affected sauces include the 26-ounce jars of First and Last Original Marinara Sauce Tomato and Basil, Meat Flavoured Traditional Pasta Sauce, and Mildly Hot and Spicy Puttanesca Sauce. These products were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and other retailers starting from September 22, 2025, all marked with a use-by date of September 26.

Although no illnesses have been reported yet, the potential threat of Botulism, a deadly form of food poisoning, has prompted a call for consumers who bought these sauces to return them to the store for a full refund. Botulism is caused by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which can develop when acidified or low-acid canned foods are not processed correctly.

Botulinum toxins, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), are extremely lethal substances that can disrupt nerve functions and lead to respiratory and muscular paralysis. While rare, symptoms of botulism include weakness, dizziness, double vision, speech difficulties, breathing issues, muscle weakness, abdominal swelling, and constipation. These symptoms are not directly caused by the bacteria but by the toxins it produces and typically manifest within 12 to 36 hours after exposure. Immediate medical attention is advised for anyone experiencing these symptoms, as the disease can be fatal in 5 to 10 percent of cases.

Although the FDA recall affects the United States, recent recalls in the UK have also raised concerns among shoppers, with supermarkets and retailers removing products from shelves due to potential health risks. These recalls are typically initiated by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) when a food item poses a hazard to consumers, whether due to allergen labeling issues or the presence of foreign materials.

In a recent alert, individuals with peanut allergies were cautioned against consuming Aldi’s Dairyfine Crispy Choc Um’s as they may contain peanuts, which could trigger severe reactions. All batches of this 121g chocolate treat are affected, and customers are advised to return them to the store for a full refund. A peanut allergy can lead to anaphylaxis, a severe and life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment with an epinephrine autoinjector (EpiPen) and prompt hospitalization.
