President Donald Trump has reportedly requested Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, as part of ongoing renaming efforts causing controversy in Canada due to trade tensions. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum mentioned that Trump directly contacted Apple regarding this change, suggesting that the alteration to “Lake America” could be imminent.
Following Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” amid strained Canada-U.S. trade talks and subsequent tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney adamantly opposed the alteration, affirming that the lake, a key Great Lake situated between Ontario and New York state, will retain its original name.
Google stated that due to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System’s formal change of “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America,” Google Maps users in the U.S. will see the updated name. However, Canadian users will still see Lake Ontario on the platform, even though some Ontario and Canadian websites briefly displayed “Lake America” due to data sourcing from Google’s U.S. API.
While affected websites showed Lake America, including on Hydro One and LCBO sites, they have since reverted to displaying Lake Ontario. Apple has not yet responded to inquiries regarding Trump’s alleged request to rename the lake on Apple Maps. It is noted that Apple had previously adjusted the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in compliance with a previous executive order by Trump, although the change is not universal across all platforms.
