Caring grandparents turned adoptive parents Larry and Deborah Dutton had provided a nurturing environment for their teenage granddaughter, Heidi, whom they had adopted as an infant. The Duttons, residents of Dewey, Oklahoma, had raised Heidi as their own in a tranquil country setting.
Larry, 72, a retired US Air Force master staff sergeant and former airport manager, and Deborah, 67, also a retired Air Force member with a background in culinary arts, were well-known in their community for their charitable acts and kindness. The couple, married for 40 years and active in their local church, were pillars of generosity.
Heidi, aged 17 at the time, had been in a relationship with Lucas Walker, 20, for a few months, and he frequently visited their rural farmhouse. Initially a typical teenager, Heidi’s behavior shifted after meeting Walker online, becoming more secluded and influenced by her older partner.
Concerns arose in January 2023 when family and neighbors realized they hadn’t seen Deborah or Larry since before the Christmas holidays. Several requests were made to the authorities for a welfare check due to the unusual absence.
Upon receiving a search warrant, law enforcement officers visited the property and detected a foul odor of decaying flesh along with a strong scent of bleach and cleaning agents. Suspecting foul play, they returned the next day with the warrant. Dutton and Walker were present as officers commenced their investigation, revealing a potential crime scene.
During the search, evidence of attempted cleanup was found throughout the home, including bloodstains under the floorboards in Deborah and Larry’s bedroom. Further inspection led to the discovery of hidden bloodied items, blood traces on wiped walls, and a disturbed patch of soil in the backyard. Subsequently, the bodies of Deborah and Larry were found buried in a shallow grave.
Arrests were made as Dutton and Walker were taken into custody and confessed to the murders, which had taken place on 19 December. Shockingly, they had remained in the residence, inadequately concealing the aftermath of the killings.
Initially, Dutton claimed responsibility for the murders, implicating Walker in the cleanup. However, she later altered her account, asserting that Walker had committed the acts and she had lied to protect him. The confessions unveiled a premeditated and violent assault on the elderly couple.
Walker had entered through the back door, armed with a pistol and a knife, waiting in Dutton’s room before attacking Deborah and Larry. Deborah was shot and then fatally stabbed, while Larry was repeatedly stabbed after the gun malfunctioned. The perpetrators then attempted to cover up the crime scene, eventually burying the victims in the backyard.
After exhuming the bodies, the community was left stunned by the horrific events that had unfolded. Walker received a 35-year sentence for two counts of second-degree murder, while Dutton, charged with more severe offenses, was sentenced to life in prison with a possibility of parole after serving a significant term.
The district attorney emphasized the calculated nature of the crime, balancing accountability with the defendants’ age. Despite the tragedy, Larry and Deborah’s legacy of love and care for their granddaughter was tragically betrayed by the ultimate act of betrayal.
