With the start of the academic year, numerous children are engaging in a fresh educational experience that is revolutionizing their learning, dietary habits, and overall growth.
Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is an innovative program that supplies millions of nutritious food portions to schools catering to a higher proportion of students eligible for free meals. This initiative aims to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.
Among the benefiting schools is Ark Putney Academy in southwest London, where comedian Babatunde Aléshé recently visited with a box of fresh produce to educate students on the importance of consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables daily.
Describing the students’ enthusiasm, Babatunde, father of two, remarked on the children’s active participation in preparing and enjoying the healthy foods provided. Launched in 2024, the Fruit & Veg for Schools initiative distributed over 10.8 million portions of fresh produce to 411 schools in its inaugural year, offering a nutritional boost to students during school hours.
The program has been extended to over 500 schools for the current academic year, ensuring each child receives a daily serving of fruits or vegetables. Positive outcomes from last year’s participants revealed improved classroom behavior, increased focus, energy levels, and overall positive behavior among students.
Babatunde emphasized the filling and energizing properties of fruits and vegetables, underscoring the impact of healthy eating habits on academic performance. The program menu includes a variety of items such as bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be incorporated into breakfast clubs or healthy tuck shops.
Babatunde highlighted the educational aspect of the initiative, teaching children the nutritional benefits of different fruits and vegetables to promote informed food choices. Beyond nourishment, the program has also had emotional benefits, empowering students through roles like “fruit monitors” to boost confidence and well-being.
Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad acknowledged the program’s positive influence on children’s lives, emphasizing the expansion to reach more young individuals in underprivileged communities. By fostering partnerships with more schools and offering a wider range of fresh produce, Tesco’s initiative is sowing the seeds for a healthier future for children across the UK.
