“Survivor Recounts Bear Attack: Crushed Skull but Miraculously Lives”

A man who survived a bear attack vividly recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the animal crushing his skull and rendering him unconscious. Dan Bigley narrowly escaped death when a large brown bear dragged him into bushes, repeatedly biting his head with its sharp teeth, fracturing his skull but miraculously avoiding penetrating his brain.

Although he lost his sight during the assault, Dan, reflecting on the incident two decades later, detailed the harrowing experience, including the chilling sounds he heard just before fearing for his life. Recalling the encounter, Dan, a long-time Alaska resident, narrated how he and his friend Jana stumbled upon the bear while walking through the forest following a day of fishing.

Coastal Alaska, home to massive brown bears towering over 9 feet and weighing up to 1,500 pounds, is known for its swift and agile predators capable of outrunning humans at speeds of 35 to 40mph over short distances. Despite Dan’s previous encounters with bears in the wild, he sensed the unusual aggression of this particular bear as it attacked them.

Unbeknownst to Dan and Jana, the bear was protecting her cubs hidden nearby, leading to the violent mauling. Dan vividly remembered the horrifying moment of realization as he was being mauled, hearing his own screams resembling that of a dying creature. The bear sank its teeth into his head, causing him to lose consciousness multiple times during the attack.

After the bear assumed Dan was deceased and left, Jana, aided by local fishermen, cared for him until emergency services arrived to transport him to the hospital. Severely injured with vital arteries severed, Dan underwent life-saving surgery following a brief period in a coma. Despite the initial grim prognosis, he eventually woke up and commenced a challenging recovery journey.

Haunted by the traumatic event, Dan, a former recreational therapist for children, shared his ongoing struggle with the mental scars left by the bear attack. Living in Anchorage with his family, Dan co-authored a book in 2013 detailing his experience and recovery process, emphasizing the theme of moving forward from the trauma.
