The Davis Cup final’s second singles match was interrupted when a spectator in the stands fell ill. Flavio Cobolli of Italy paused his attempt to break Jaume Munar’s serve upon noticing the situation.
Munar had won the first set 6-1 and was leading in the second set before Cobolli had a chance to break back. The match came to a halt as the medical team responded to the incident, prompting both players to return to their benches.
Commentator Arvind Parmar commended Cobolli for his swift response, highlighting the crowd’s quick reaction to the situation. The focus shifted to the unwell fan in the top rows of the stands, where officials and first aid responders were providing assistance.
During the break, umpire Marijana Veljovic communicated with the players, while Italian captain Filippo Volandri offered advice to Cobolli. As the fan was escorted out of the stands, Parmar noted the potential delay in the game for the person’s safe removal.
The delay lasted approximately ten minutes, after which Cobolli managed to break Munar’s serve and even the second set at 1-1. Italy held a 1-0 lead in the singles matches, with Matteo Berrettini securing a victory over Pablo Carreno Busta.
Italy aimed to secure a third consecutive Davis Cup title, a feat not achieved since the USA’s five straight wins in 1972, by potentially winning the match. On the other hand, a win for Munar would force a decisive doubles round in the final.
Both Italy and Spain were without Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner for the final, as both players withdrew before the tournament commenced.
