“Scottish Power Named Poorest Energy Supplier in UK”

Scottish Power has been identified as the poorest energy supplier in the UK according to recent research findings. The company received negative ratings primarily for its handling of customer complaints, while scoring average in other aspects. Notably, Scottish Power was not the only major player in the industry to receive criticism, as consumer group Which? also named EDF Energy and British Gas among the bottom three performers.

The research conducted by Which? involved nearly 12,000 energy customers in its annual satisfaction survey, alongside an evaluation of the operational practices and policies of 17 energy companies. Scottish Power ranked second lowest overall, with a customer satisfaction rating of 62% and an overall score of 56% after considering various metrics. The company received a mere four out of 15 points for complaint resolution and faced criticism across categories such as billing accuracy, customer communication, and pricing.

EDF Energy fared slightly better with an overall score of 58%, although it received the lowest rating for customer contact due to limited monitoring of phone lines and email responsiveness. British Gas scored 59% overall and performed poorly in the area of complaint resolution.

Conversely, the lesser-known supplier E received high praise with an impressive overall score of 79%. The company, based in Birmingham and serving over 300,000 customers, stands out for not imposing penalty fees on customers looking to switch providers. E excelled in areas such as customer communication and clarity of statements, although feedback was gathered from a smaller sample size of 92 customers.

Octopus Energy secured the second-highest score at 74% and, alongside two other suppliers, 100Green and Sainsbury’s Energy, was recognized as a Which? Recommended Provider for their exceptional performance.

Emily Seymour, the Energy Editor at Which?, emphasized the importance of customer satisfaction and urged dissatisfied customers to explore better options in the market. She highlighted the availability of competitive fixed tariffs and superior customer service as reasons for customers to consider switching suppliers.

In response to the rankings, a ScottishPower spokesperson defended the company’s performance, citing positive feedback from customers and investments made to enhance service quality. EDF Energy expressed commitment to improving its services, especially for customers in need of assistance. British Gas highlighted a significant decrease in complaints over the past two years and referenced positive customer satisfaction data from regulator Ofgem.

The energy sector continues to witness shifts in customer preferences, with an increasing focus on value for money and quality service. Customers are encouraged to explore alternative suppliers offering competitive tariffs and superior customer support for a more satisfactory experience.
