Homeowners are being advised to be on the lookout for a rare spider making a resurgence in the autumn season. The Fen Raft Spider, known for its fish-eating habits, was once believed to be extinct in Britain but is now being spotted in UK homes. These spiders, which can reach the size of a human hand, are characterized by their chocolate-brown bodies with cream-white stripes and the ability to walk on water.

Nearly wiped out in 2010 due to habitat loss, the Fen Raft Spider population is rebounding thanks to conservation efforts by organizations like the RSPB. These spiders, despite their intimidating appearance, are harmless to humans and primarily feed on invertebrates such as spiders, dragonfly larvae, and pond skaters. They are also capable of capturing small vertebrates like fish and tadpoles.

Named for their unique ability to run across water surfaces to capture prey, Fen Raft Spiders are semi-aquatic hunters that rely on their long, sensitive legs to detect vibrations on the water’s surface. Conservation initiatives by various wildlife trusts and organizations have successfully established sustainable spider populations in Norfolk, saving these critically endangered creatures from the brink of extinction.

Tim Strudwick, RSPB Mid Yare nature reserves site manager, expressed pride in the role their reserves have played in the recovery of the Fen Raft Spider population. These spiders contribute to the diverse aquatic ecosystems in grazing ditches and are not only impressive in size but also visually striking.
