“Northland Properties Fined $624k for Asbestos Violations”

A recent report obtained via a freedom of information request from WorkSafeBC has brought to light that Northland Properties, the operator of a Sandman Hotel in Williams Lake, had previously violated asbestos regulations more than a dozen times across various locations in British Columbia. The report details a penalty of $624,051.48 imposed on Northland Properties for failing to ensure worker safety during a renovation project at the Williams Lake hotel in December 2025.

During an inspection at the site, a WorkSafeBC inspector observed visible mold on the walls, absence of decontamination measures, and only one worker wearing a disposable dust mask voluntarily. Despite a pre-construction report indicating the presence of asbestos in drywall compound and lead-containing paint, the risks were not communicated to the employees.

The report highlights that due to these shortcomings, individuals accessing the renovation area were likely exposed to asbestos and other hazardous materials. Additionally, cross-contamination within the hotel and the spread of contaminated debris to other areas were probable risks.

After the inspection, WorkSafeBC issued a stop-work order at the site, following which the hotel operator initiated asbestos abatement before resuming renovations. The workplace regulator found that Northland could not demonstrate conducting due diligence concerning asbestos safety and compliance with worker safety regulations.

The report emphasized that asbestos and lead are confirmed carcinogens, and both hotel workers and guests may have been exposed to asbestos fibers during the renovation project. The employer failed to take appropriate action despite possessing a hazardous materials survey indicating the presence of asbestos, thereby exposing workers to a confirmed carcinogen.

WorkSafeBC, in penalizing Northland over $620,000, referenced multiple previous violations related to asbestos at various Sandman Hotel locations across British Columbia. The company had received numerous penalties, stop-work orders, and safety notices regarding hazardous material exposure over more than a decade.

Northland Properties, based in Vancouver, operates various hospitality brands, including Denny’s Canada, Grouse Mountain Resort, and Chop Steakhouse. The CEO, Tom Gaglardi, also owns the NHL’s Dallas Stars. The company has stated that no guests were exposed to asbestos or hazardous materials, and they have requested a review of the administrative penalty imposed by WorkSafeBC, emphasizing their commitment to the health and safety of their staff and guests.
