Lando Norris clinched the Drivers’ Championship title, becoming the 11th British driver to achieve this milestone by securing third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Heading into the race weekend, Norris held a 12-point lead over Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, with his teammate Oscar Piastri also in contention, just four points behind Verstappen.
Despite missing a chance to secure the championship in the previous race in Qatar due to a strategic misstep by McLaren, Norris faced intense pressure in Abu Dhabi to seal the title. Qualifying saw Norris outperform Piastri to secure a front-row start alongside Verstappen.
During the race, Norris had a good start but was overtaken by Piastri early on, who executed a clever move on harder tires. Pressure from Charles Leclerc kept Norris on edge, but strategic pit stops helped Norris maintain his position ahead of his rivals.
A penalty for Tsunoda further aided Norris as he navigated through traffic and extended his lead over Leclerc. With Piastri making his final pit stop, McLaren opted for a cautious approach to secure Norris’ victory. Despite Leclerc closing in towards the end, Norris managed his tires well to maintain his lead and secure the championship.
The race marked the culmination of a seven-year journey for Norris, bringing British motorsport back to the pinnacle of Formula 1 success.
