Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have broken their silence following their disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Norris claimed second place behind Max Verstappen, with Piastri finishing fourth. However, both McLaren drivers were disqualified due to post-race technical issues, specifically excessive skid-block wear. This disqualification affects the championship standings with only two rounds remaining.
Norris now holds a 24-point lead over Piastri and Verstappen. In a statement, Norris expressed frustration over the disqualification, emphasizing the team’s focus on delivering optimal performance in the upcoming races. Piastri also voiced disappointment over the outcome, highlighting the need to regroup and strive for maximum points in the remaining rounds.
McLaren issued an apology to Norris and Piastri for the breach of technical regulations, citing unexpected car behavior during the race. The team acknowledged the unintentional nature of the breach and expressed regret for the impact on the drivers’ championship campaigns. Despite the setback, McLaren remains committed to performing well in the remaining races.
The FIA scrutineers identified that the skid planks beneath the McLaren cars were below the required 9mm thickness at the end of the race, indicating an illegally low ride height. This violation led to the disqualification of both cars from the final race classification.
