Noa-Lynn van Leuven responded to criticism regarding her participation in women’s darts events. The 29-year-old transgender player from the Netherlands became the first Dutch woman to qualify for the World Darts Championship last year. Despite winning the opening set in her first-round match, she was defeated 3-1 by Kevin Doets.

The World Darts Federation (WDF) recently banned transgender players from their events, but they are still allowed to compete in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) competitions with no indication of policy change. Van Leuven, in an interview with Nu.nl, defended her eligibility, stating she meets all rules and will not engage in constant identity debates.

The Netherlands Olympic committee NOC*NSF released draft guidance on transgender participation, suggesting challenges in achieving fair competition due to physical differences in some sports globally. Van Leuven clarified that darts is skill-based, not physical, reacting to public misinterpretation of the guidance.

While the PDC currently maintains its eligibility criteria, Van Leuven acknowledged that future changes could impact her career and the transgender community as a whole. Despite facing online abuse and mental health struggles, she secured a spot at the upcoming World Championship, marking a resilient comeback from a dark period in her life.

Van Leuven admitted to battling mental health issues, including depression, leading to time away from work. However, she has since regained her passion for the sport, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the World Championship after overcoming challenging times.
