Sickening surveillance footage captured a rapist scouring a nightclub in Scotland, targeting potential victims mere hours before drugging and sexually assaulting two women. Kenan Baki, aged 46, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping one woman and sexually assaulting another after spiking their drinks at Society nightclub in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on September 2, 2023.
During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, prosecutors presented video evidence of the perpetrator moving around the club, seemingly inspecting tables for unattended drinks while seeking out solitary women. Subsequent CCTV footage revealed a woman collapsing in a chair at Baki’s nearby barber shop after he escorted her there when she became ill from the drugs. In the footage, the victim is seen conversing with Baki as he caresses her hair and uses a hairdryer on her face under the pretense of styling her hair. She then appears to lose consciousness, her head falling back in the chair, before Baki carries her to the back of the shop where he raped her.
Earlier that same evening, Baki had also drugged and sexually assaulted another woman by slipping an unknown substance into her drink. Jurors observed CCTV footage of the woman becoming unwell, struggling to move and remain awake before collapsing. Concerned members of the public later intervened to help the victim.
At the High Court in Kilmarnock, Baki was handed an extended 11-year sentence, including nine years in prison, for his convictions of rape and sexual assault. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, and a non-harassment order was issued for an indefinite period.
Fiona Kirkby, Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, highlighted the significant danger posed by Kenan Baki through his predatory actions towards women. Kirkby emphasized that holding perpetrators like Baki accountable for their abhorrent behavior sends a clear message to those seeking to harm others sexually. She encouraged individuals impacted by similar offenses to come forward when they are ready, assuring them of support and justice through the legal system.
In a concerning statistic, 168 cases of drink spiking were reported to police in Scotland between 2023 and 2024. However, only nine of these cases were forwarded to the Crown Office due to insufficient evidence.
