In the midst of a small town, police are currently probing five disturbing incidents related to rat poisoning, including one involving a child falling ill. These occurrences have been confined to three families residing in the same locality, with no apparent ties to eateries.
Recently, five individuals were rushed to different medical facilities due to concerns that they might have consumed contaminated takeaway food. Medical professionals now suspect the ingestion of brodifacoum, a common ingredient in rat poison that hampers the clotting process by interfering with vitamin K, causing blood to thin.
Symptoms of brodifacoum poisoning may manifest after a few days and can range from bleeding gums, excessive bleeding from minor wounds, fatigue, difficulty breathing, and easy bruising to the presence of blood in urine and feces, as stated by National Pest Control Agencies.
In severe cases, ingestion of brodifacoum can be fatal, with a lethal dosage estimated to be around 15mg of pure brodifacoum per kilogram of body weight. Children may face more serious consequences.
These incidents occurred in Brisbane, Australia, with affected individuals receiving treatment at Logan and Princess Alexandra hospitals. Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls clarified that no evidence points to a specific source like a fast-food outlet, and investigations by both police and health authorities are ongoing.
Chief Health Officer Catherine McDougall confirmed that the cases are not being treated as suspicious and efforts are underway to establish connections between them. She emphasized the collaboration between health officials and police in conducting a thorough investigation to identify the source and toxicology involved.
Fortunately, no new cases have been reported, but doctors are advised to remain vigilant for patients displaying unexplained bleeding. Current patients are receiving treatment, with some discharged after vitamin K therapy.
Queensland police are now coordinating with health officials to launch an investigation into the matter.
