Laura Mcloughlin, a mother of two, shares her alarming journey after a hurried doctor’s advice to switch to non-wired bras led to a stage four cancer diagnosis. Laura first noticed sharp pains and a lump in her right breast in April 2020. Following a brief examination by a rushed doctor at Bassetlaw Hospital, where no scans were conducted, Laura was advised that her issue was likely hormonal and to change to non-wired bras.
In August 2020, Laura returned to the clinic as her symptoms persisted, and further tests revealed lobular breast cancer. Despite scheduling a mastectomy, doctors discovered the cancer had spread, making it incurable. Laura now undergoes targeted therapy and medication treatment.
Laura emphasizes the importance of promptly addressing any unusual symptoms. Reflecting on her experience, she stresses the necessity of self-checks and seeking medical attention. Laura’s journey, filled with challenges and treatments, includes coping with early menopause and monthly hospital visits.
Karen Jessop, Chief Nurse at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, acknowledges the seriousness of patient concerns and encourages individuals to contact the Trust’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service for support and review.
Laura’s involvement with the Coppa Feel breast cancer charity has provided her with purpose and strength throughout her ongoing battle. She advises others to prioritize health and seek medical help for any concerning changes, underscoring the importance of early detection and proactive care.
