“Massacre in Sudan Hospital: Over 1,500 Dead”

Hundreds of individuals, including patients, medical personnel, and visitors, lost their lives in a hospital due to an attack by paramilitary forces. The death toll in the Sudanese city has surpassed 1,500, with reports describing the situation as catastrophic.

Reports from those fleeing the western city of el-Fasher in war-torn Sudan recount horrifying acts committed by fighters who seized control of North Darfur’s provincial capital over the weekend. Among the victims were 460 patients at the Saudi Maternity Hospital, where they were brutally killed by fighters from the Rapid Support Forces. Witnesses reported that the RSF fighters conducted door-to-door assaults, targeting and harming civilians, including women and children, resulting in numerous fatalities.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan, spanning two years, has claimed the lives of over 40,000 individuals, though human rights organizations believe this figure to be significantly underestimated. This crisis has led to over 14 million people being displaced, marking one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies. The recent capture of el-Fasher by a formidable Arab-led force has sparked concerns of potential further division within Africa’s third-largest nation, reminiscent of the split that led to South Sudan’s independence after years of internal strife.

Survivors and aid workers have recounted horrific details of the atrocities committed by the RSF following the capture of the army’s final stronghold in Darfur. The RSF fighters showed no mercy, indiscriminately killing individuals within the Saudi Hospital, as reported by the Sudan Doctors Network. The RSF commander acknowledged “abuses” by his forces, promising an investigation into the matter. Disturbing footage shared online depicted bodies strewn across the floor of the hospital, showcasing the brutality of the attacks.

The violence in el-Fasher has triggered a mass exodus of over 36,000 people, mostly seeking refuge in rural areas around the city. Eyewitnesses have described widespread killings rooted in ethnic and political differences, with vulnerable individuals, including those with disabilities, being targeted and killed. Survivors have detailed harrowing experiences of torture, sexual assault, and indiscriminate shootings by the RSF fighters.

Medical facilities, such as the hospital operated by Doctors Without Borders in Tawila, have been inundated with injured individuals, many of whom have also suffered from malnutrition and severe dehydration. The influx of orphaned children seeking medical assistance underscores the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

Recent reports from the Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab have confirmed ongoing mass killings by the RSF in and around el-Fasher. The situation has been described as a catastrophe by humanitarian organizations, with children bearing the brunt of the violence and resulting hardships. The true extent of the devastation is challenging to ascertain due to communication restrictions, with estimates of casualties likely falling short of the actual toll.

Before the recent escalation of violence, nearly 1,850 civilians had lost their lives in North Darfur, with a significant portion of the fatalities concentrated in el-Fasher. The region continues to be engulfed in turmoil, with no immediate respite in sight for the beleaguered population.
