“Longest UK Hunger Strike in Decades Enters Critical Stage”

The ongoing hunger strike by six individuals in British prisons has reached a critical stage after 46 days without food. This marks the longest hunger strike in decades, with the last major hunger strike being the 1981 Irish Republican Army protests in HMP Maze / Long Kesh.

The hunger strikers, including Qesser Zuhrah, Amu Gib, Heba Muraisa, Teuta Hoxha, Kamran Ahmed, and Lewie Chiaramello, are protesting in support of Palestine and are awaiting trial for their direct action activities. Two other prisoners have since stopped their hunger strikes. The hunger strike, initiated by Palestine Action on November 2, is now entering its second month.

The protesters, known as the Filton 24 and Brize Norton 4, are affiliated with Palestine Action and were involved in actions such as breaking into RAF Brize Norton and causing damage to Elbit’s research center. Despite not being convicted of any offenses yet, they remain in custody awaiting trial dates that are years away.

The hunger strikers have put forth five demands, including an end to prison censorship, immediate bail for Palestine Action prisoners, fair trials, removal of the ‘terror’ classification, and closure of all Elbit Systems sites in the UK. These demands are supported by Prisoners4Palestine, a prisoner-led collective advocating for those detained in relation to Palestinian liberation.

Concerns have been raised about the deteriorating health of the hunger strikers, with reports of medical issues and urgent need for hospitalization. Supporters, including MPs and medical professionals, have been advocating for proper medical attention for the hunger strikers. Efforts are being made to raise awareness and push for action from government officials to prevent any tragic outcomes.

Amid growing concerns, calls have been made for intervention by political figures like David Lammy, Wes Streeting, and Keir Starmer, but responses have been lacking. The legal representatives of the hunger strikers have highlighted the potential risks and urged for immediate action to prevent any deaths in custody.

The hunger strike has garnered support from various sectors, with over 200 prominent figures signing an open letter urging the Prime Minister to intervene before any casualties occur. The solidarity shown by individuals from music, sports, and film industries reflects the widespread concern over the hunger strikers’ plight and the need for urgent action to address their demands and ensure their well-being.
