Labour MP Streeting Urges Baroness Mone to Settle £39M PPE Debt

Labour MP Wes Streeting has strongly criticized Baroness Mone for the need to take legal action to recover millions owed to the public for defective PPE. The Health Secretary has intensified the pressure on Baroness Mone, emphasizing the urgency for her to settle the substantial debt. Streeting hinted at undisclosed strategies to recoup the funds from PPE Medpro, aiming to stay ahead of Baroness Mone’s legal team.

During an interview on LBC, Streeting affirmed their pursuit of the owed money while being cautious not to disclose too much information that could aid Baroness Mone’s legal defense. He emphasized the disgraceful nature of the situation, condemning any exploitation of taxpayer funds. Streeting urged Baroness Mone, a member of the House of Lords, to act responsibly and reimburse the money without the need for legal intervention.

PPE Medpro, led by Baroness Mone’s husband Doug Barrowman, faced legal action from the Department of Health and Social Care for providing faulty gowns during the pandemic. The firm’s insolvency was recently revealed, leaving a substantial debt of £39 million to the government.

Additionally, the company owes £148 million following a court ruling over substandard gowns. Baroness Mone and Mr. Barrowman, residing in the tax haven of the Isle of Man, reportedly profited £65 million from PPE deals secured through lobbying efforts.

The ongoing investigation by the National Crime Agency involves the couple and their company, although they have denied any misconduct. Baroness Mone’s legal representatives expressed concerns over prejudicial comments from public figures and stressed their clients’ innocence, citing a stalled investigation by the NCA.

The legal team emphasized the importance of respecting the legal process and expressed confidence in vindication. Streeting, the Prime Minister, and the Chancellor have been urged to refrain from making prejudicial remarks during the ongoing legal proceedings.
